Cortijo Don Cristobal

Experiences and Sites

Being located in the epicentre of Andalusia, Antequera offers both the opportunity to explore the jewels of medieval Arabic architecture at Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla, but also a wealth of local experiences and world heritage sights to visit.

Antequera- Roman ruins, Arabic Citadel, Neoliphic dolmens; The city of churches, with its famous tapas bars and restaurants, abundance of historical and architectural gems, set in a beautiful location at the foot of the mountains. (Our opinion- Not one but two world heritage sites and an incredible history, just on your doorstep)

Cordoba - The immense Mesquita Mosque, Alcazar Los Reyes and architecture spanning 1000 years. (Our opinion- We love Cordoba and think it is an amazing city to visit)

Granada - Sitting at the base of the snow capped Sierra Nevada are the Alhambra palaces and Alcazar, surrounded by a vibrant city, still in touch with its past and home to the Spanish guitar. (Our opinion- Alhambra is thought to be one of the world’s must sees)

Sevilla- The castle and palace of former Arabic and Spanish kings, the centre of the dark ages of the inquisition and the birthplace of Rome’s most famous emperors (Our opinion- An incredible history to explore here, but try to be early to avoid the afternoon heat)

Caminito Del Rey (El Chorro)- Take a long (about 2-2.5 hour) but easy hike down through the gorge and across the King’s walkway at El Chorro. Stunning scenery as you pass safely over what was one of the world’s most dangerous pathways (Our opinion- An amazing trip and kayaking available in the local lakes, but avoid July/August heat)

Ronda- One of Spain's oldest towns, spanning a huge gorge and with an amazing bridge joining the two sides (Our opinion- combined with a visit to El Chorro, would make a wonderful, but long day out)

Recommended places to visit with a hire car:

The Flamingo Lagune and Fuenta de Piedra (10 minutes) An inland salt water Laguna and wildlife sanctuary that is home to thousands of flamingos across May/June

El Torcal (25 minutes) Situated high in the mountains just behind Antequera lye the incredible rock formations, forming the backdrop to many famous films and frequented by the odd amorous goat. A World Heritage sight offering free access for lovely (but rocky) walks with incredible views.

The Antequera Wolf Park (20 minutes) Owned and run by an eccentric German, this wild park is close to Antequera and home to a wide variety of wolves.

Malaga Beaches (45-60 minutes) As well as the Malageta beach in the heart of Malaga, there are very popular beaches to the west of Malaga, near the Parador hotel, and a choice of quieter, more local beaches to the east (Parasols, Beach chairs and picnic available on request)

Malaga Old Town (50 minutes) Visit the birthplace of Picasso, wander around Arabic and Roman architecture and enjoy a wealth of eateries and museums. From here it is just a short stroll over to Malaga’s new harbour with its bars, restaurants and boats of coarse.

The caves at Nerja (1hr 20 minutes, but stunning scenery cutting across country) The caves are breathtaking (and nice and cool) and are situated on the edge of the national park with fabulous walks.
